Robert M. Wegner

Has debuted in 2002, with a story The last flight of the Night Cowboy. His book debut was collection of Stories from Meekhan borderland. North-South, issued in 2009. And in 2012 his first novel has shown up; Sky of steel, set in earlier outlined reality of Meekhan. He is five times Janusz A. At Eurocon 2014 he received the Encouragement Award from European Science Fiction Society. He lives and works in Silesia. He calls himself „husband of a wonderful woman and father of two pretty, smart, and mischievous beasts that call themselves daughters”. His hobby is reading books and watching movies – from fantasy, through criminal and psychological, to anime. His main occupation is writing, but he provides for the family from non-literary work. He also has a University diploma in his drawer, but he claims that, „like most of graduates, he could use it as a door chock”. He precisely separates his private life from the pleasure of writing, and that is why he uses the pen name.

Maja Lidia Kossakowska

Maja Lidia Kossakowska

The Renaissance woman. The designer of worlds. Maja Lidia Kossakowska is one of the most widely read writers in Poland. The writer was brought up on the classics and American literature: Faulkner, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Chandler, Cortazar and Llosa. Publishing house Fabryka Słów has published her sixteen books. Her sensitivity was formed while studying in art school, during archaeological studies and, above all thanks to reading. Because Kossakowski house was always full of books and with none of the family could live without reading. Archaeology taught her to explore and depict worlds, made her imagination more vivid, taught her about plot creation, which she tested in practice while realizing documentary TV programs and taking the first literary attempts. The author likes to experiment with styles and genres. However, she always pays attention to details – she carefully writes out particular chapters and scenes, painfully precise and consequent in her resolutions. Multiple times nominated for most prestigious Polish fantasy awards; eight times for Janusz A. Zajdel Prize, her microstory Zwierciadło (Mirror) reached third place in ranking among readers of “Sfinks”. In 2001 she was awarded with Srebrny Glob (Silver Globe) in category ‘short story of the year’ for the story „Beznogi Tancerz” (The legless dancer), in 2006 she won Złoty Kot (Golden Cat) for the angelic novel cycle. In 2007 she was awarded with Śląkfa for the author of the year. She won Janusz A. Zajdel Prize of Polish Fandom twice: in 2007 for the short story „Smok tańczy dla Chung Fonga” (Dragon is dancing for Chung Fong) and in 2012 for the novel „Grillbar Galaktyka”.

Peter Watts

Peter Watts

Peter Watts (www.rifters.com) spent the first two decades of his adult life as a marine biologist. After fleeing academia for science fiction, he became known for the habit of appending technical bibliographies onto his novels; this both confers a veneer of credibility and covers his ass against nitpickers. Described by Canada's Globe & Mail as "one of the very best [hard-sf writers] alive", the overall effect of his prose is perhaps best summed up by critic James Nicoll: "Whenever I find my will to live becoming too strong, I read Peter Watts''. Watts' debut novel (Starfish) was a New York Times Notable Book, while his fourth (Blindsight)— a rumination on the utility of consciousness which, despite an unhealthy focus on space vampires, has become a required text in undergraduate courses ranging from philosophy to neuroscience— made the final ballot for numerous North American genre awards, winning exactly none of them. (It did, however, win a shitload of awards elsewhere including here in Poland, where he seems to be especially popular for reasons which remain unclear.) His shorter work has also picked up trophies in a variety of jurisdictions, notably a Shirley Jackson (possibly due to fan sympathy over nearly dying of flesh-eating disease in 2011) and a Hugo (possibly due to fan outrage over an altercation with US border guards in 2009). The latter incident resulted in Watts being barred from entering the US— not getting on the ground fast enough after being punched in the face by border guards is a "felony" under Michigan statutes— but he can't honestly say he misses the place all that much. Watts's work is available in 20 languages. He and his cat, Banana* (since deceased) have both appeared in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. A few years ago he briefly returned to science with a postdoc in molecular genetics, but he really sucked at it. *Not the orange cat in the author photo. That cat is BOG, who remains very much alive.

Magda Kozak

Magda Kozak

The greatest of warriors among Polish fantasy writers. Tested in the heat of battle, at conventions and behind the keyboard. For a professional soldier and paramedic she looks pretty innocent. Magda is a lieutenant in the 2nd Paramedic Squad in Mińsk Mazowiecki. She participated in a mission in Afghanistan twice during the 7th and 9th deployment of the Polish Battalion; there she was wounded by rocket fire. Outside of her military duty she can be seen at ER or in the ambulance. Her literary debut was a novel called “Nighter”, published in 2006 (in 2009 Closterkeller band created a song of the same title inspired by the events described in the novel, the song came with a very intriguing music video). The books “Renegade” and “Nobody” continue the story described in “Nighter” (all 3 books have been nominated to Janusz A. Zajdel’s Polish Fandom Awards respectively in 2006, 07 and 08) Her next novels are “Fiolet” (Violet) from 2010, “Paskuda” (The Freak) from 2012 and “Łzy Diabła” (Devil’s Tears) from 2015. The last one has also been nominated for the aforementioned Award and also for Jerzy Żuławski’s Literary Award. Additionally, Magda is an author of various short stories, two of which – “Sznurki Przeznaczenia” (Strings of Destiny, 2008) and “Strasznie mi się podobasz” (You’re awfully attractive to me, 2011) were nominated to Zajdel’s reward as well.

Andrzej Pilipiuk

Andrzej Pilipiuk

An indefatigable tracker of junk room curios. Collector of literary awards, who turned writing with passion into a way of making a living. His success is best measured by almost 50 published books, sold in a million copies, and a spot on the list of most often read Polish writers. A homo literatus who approaches writing with one core principle – he works on a tight schedule, every day, and when he feels plot-fatigue, he moves on to another work. Forestalling criticism, he called himself the Great Hack. Educated as an archaeologist, he is also an amateur meteor hunter. Hopelessly infatuated with forgotten explorers and inventions of the 19th century. A social activist. At his own cost and through enormous work he published an unique album about Wojsławice, the birthplace of Jakub Wędrowycz. Creator of a pantheon of remarkable literary characters and Jakub Wędrowycz – a covetous, vindictive yokel, moonshiner and exorcist. Polish literature's only, native superhero, who has made us laugh over the years, and even has his own festival, Jakub Wędrowycz Days, which takes place in July in Wojsławice. Four times winner of the prestigious Nautilus award. He received several nominations for the Janusz A. Zajdel award, and won it once. He received the Empik Bestseller award in 2009. Nominated for the Empik Bestseller in 2016. He drink tea. Not shaken, and definitely not stirred. Brewed in a samovar.

Marcin Podlewski

Marcin Podlewski

He was supposed to become an operator of CNC lathe. But he applied to philosophy studies and finally ended up studying journalism. He still feels sentimental though about grease, carded denim and angled knives cutting steel into screws. He made his debut hundred years ago in the magazine the „LAMP” to disappear for a few years on the suffering from creative stupor. As he says, he experienced a reset while he was writing „Happy END” - his debut novel, a mixture of horror, fantasy and post-apocalyptic fiction published in 2013. In the same year with the short story „Edmund On The Other Side Of The Mirror” (Nominated for Zajdel Prize 2013) he won the competition for the 30th anniversary of magazine „Nowa Fantastyka”. He was preparing thoroughly for a space opera. Full research for the book took him a long time: from really existing galactic maps, the entire structure of described world, ending with the issues of astronautics. That is how he created „Skokowiec” - the first part of the planned four-volume series „The Depth” about an Universe, in which Milky Way once dominated by men was destroyed almost totally due to the range of terrible wars, and hyperspace jumps through „The Depth” can lead to madness disastrous in consequences. „Skokowiec” was nominated for Book of the Year 2015 in magazine „Nowa Fantastyka”. Series „The Depth” is definitely one of the biggest surprises in the domestic fiction in recent years. The author lives with his wife, son and Prozac - antidepressant kitten, whom the family took in after losing a previous one, named Nerwosola.

Jarosław Grzędowicz

Jarosław Grzędowicz

Debuted in 1982 with a short story “Azyl dla starych pilotów” (Asylum for elder pilots) in a weekly magazine “Odgłosy” (Sounds). Unfortunately, in these days in Poland personal computers were as popular as gingerbread houses, world wide web was known only to specialists (and fantasy writers) and magazines were used as a toilet paper (for real!). Because of that, this novel is currently considered as lost. In 1990 he was one of creators of literary magazine “Fenix” (Phoenix), and in years 1993-2001 he was working as editor-in-chief of that magazine. After “Fenix” was terminated, he focused on his own “creative work” and currently is known as one of the most valued and popular polish fantasy writers. He was nominated for literary awards numerous times. In these terms his most successful book is “Pan Lodowego Ogrodu” (The Lord of the Ice Garden) vol. 1 in year 2006 – Janusz A. Zajdel prize for year 2005 (novel category), Śląkfa prize (writer of the year category), Sfinks prize (polish novel of the year category) and Fahrenheit redaction prize (creation of the year category). He’s also the only writer in history to win two Janusz A. Zajdel prizes in one year, in both story and novel categories - novel for previously mentioned “Pan Lodowego Ogrodu” vol. 1 and story for “Wilcza zamieć” (Wolf’s blizzard).

Those twin passions of gaming and art have fuelled his career, and he has now worked with all the major print game publishers. His enthusiasm remains undimmed, and he continues to create art within that industry, where he is particularly noted for his complex, detailed scenes, and strong narratives. In contrast to his figuratively dense commissioned work his personal project, ‘Wildborn’, focuses on landscapes and atmosphere. He has always preferred to work traditionally and continues to enjoy the exploration of his favoured medium - oils.
